Sayonara to French Michelin reign
TOKYO: Japan has swiped the global culinary crown from France as the country with the highest number of restaurants with three Michelin stars.
It now has 29 three-star restaurants, highlighted in the new Michelin Guide to the western cities of Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara.
The figure eclipses the 25 in France, traditionally regarded as home to the finest cuisine, chefs and restaurants.
Story continues below ''Japan is a unique country with many cities full of high-level cuisine,'' Bernard Delmas, president of Michelin in Tokyo, said. ''That is why, even in the fifth year of the arrival of our guide in Japan, we continue to discover new stars to introduce to our readers.''
Last year, Japan had a total of 26 Michelin three-star restaurants, putting it on a par with France for the first time.
The closure of Marc Veyrat's three-starred restaurant in Savoie resulted in France's total dropping to 25, allowing Japan to take the lead earlier this year. Japan's status as a culinary leader over France was confirmed overnight with the publication of the 2012 guide, which bestowed 296 stars upon establishments in western Japan.
In the new guide, to be published in English and Japanese, there are 15 restaurants in this region with three stars, an accolade which is tribute to ''exceptional cuisine worth a special journey''.
